What's all that mean?
The shield is in four parts (quarterly)
The first quarter
is blue (azure) with three boars heads. These heads are couped, meaning
severed in a straight line. The heads are gold (or) with tongues
out (langued) in red (gules). This quarter represents Gordon.
The second quarter
is gold (or) with three lion's heads erased, meaning torn off, leaving a
jagged edge versus the couped in the first quarter. The lion's heads
are red (gules) with tongues out (langued) in blue (azure). This quarter
represents the Lordship of Badenoch.
The third quarter
is gold (or) with three crescents. Crescents are half moons with horns
pointing upwards. These are within a Royal Tressure which is a double
tressure, a narrow border running parallel to the edge of the shield but
not adjacent to it. It is decorated with fleurs de lis (flory) that
run alternately from head to tail (counter flory) and they are red (gules).
This quarter represents the Seton family.
The fourth quarter
is blue (azure) with three stylized strawberry flowers (fraise). These flowers
are usually depicted as a floral form with five petals, called a cinquefoil.
The flowers are silver or white (argent). This quarter represents
the Aboyne lands.
