Duchess of Gordon’s Highland Hideaway for Sale

The 1,018-acre estate of Kinrara, near Aviemore, has been put up for sale for offers over £3 million. The estate is of great interest to Gordons, as it was formerly part of the estates of our past clan chief, the 4th Duke of Gordon, and it was here that his wife the celebrated Jane Maxwell, held court after their estrangement.

The large mansion house of Kinrara, built in 1804, features a sprung dance floor that runs the full length of the ground floor, apparently in regular use during the Duchess’s time as a near-neighbour recorded in her diaries of the time ‘We were often at Kinrara, the Duchess having perpetual dances’! The estate passed out of the family during large-scale estate sales in the 1930s precipitated by the extensive death duties that followed the death of the then Duke of Richmond and Gordon.
